Mile Sur Mera Tumhara-Do You Like the New Version?

Posted in

Structuralism has been replaced by post structuralism. Salman Khan has been replaced by Shahid Kapoor (That is very debatable though). Sholay being remade as Ramgopal Varma ki Sholay. The 80’s pop scene in India which comprised of mehnaz, Anadia and Shweta Shetty has now moved and made way for Bhangra, Sonu Kakkar and the likes. It is no different then, that Doordarshan’s classic ‘Mile sur Mera Tumhara’ has been replaced by a newer version.

Screened first in 1988, the song was one of the markers of my childhood. I remember whenever I switched on the TV this song would be on air. I was obviously too young at that time to understand the concept of national pride and national unity but this song made me feel really nice that I lived in a country that spoke so many languages. One of the striking things about the video was also the various locales that it was shot at and the various communities that it represented. The video did not just have film actors but people from all walks of life like writer Sunil Gangopadhyay, sportsmen Chuni Goswami, P.K Banerji, Gurbux Singh other than actors Deepa Sahi, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Mallika Sarbhai and a host of other people. My favourite part was obviously where the song goes Bengali and Kolkata’s famous Rabindra Sadan metro station is shown and the intelligentsia of Bengal walk out of the train. I can actually rewind that part over and over again.

Recently when I heard a new version of the song was being made I was very sceptical, I did not really think that the song would live up to its predecessor, however i was pleasantly surprised- I though the video was very well crafted and it gave more emphasis to the regional languages which the earlier one had just touched upon but not in great detail. The presence of the various stars obviously added a great star value to the video( like the earlier one) but it did not give enough emphasis on the sportspeople and it completely obliterated the fact that we have writers, poets and others who are also faces which constitute our great nation. While i was happy that Rituparna and Prasenjit got a place from Bengal in this new video I was sorely disappointed that the makers did not feel that Abdul Kalam, or Saurav Ganguly had a place in it. The video did not touch upon the Buddhist and Jains living in India who are also a part of our nation. Again i was happy that the video had a segment devoted entirely to sign language- which was one of the redeemable features of this video. I think comparing this video to the earlier one would be unfair since they are quite different from each other.

The makers I feel could have been a bit more sensitive when making this video and not crammed the sports people in the last few minutes of this otherwise long video (again a major criticism i have about it is its length- a staggering sixteen minutes as opposed to the earlier five minute one) but as far as the message of national integration is concerned it come across just well. On a personal note I obviously prefer the older version more than the new one but it’s up to the people of India who are represented in this song- what they feel the song conveys to their construction of nationalism and national pride.

ilove my country

Please Re-make the whole thing - remove the Bollywood glamour !

The new version could no way beat the old version and new version has featured a completely different view of India. I did not like that woman whose dress looked like a bath robe exposing her legs. Is she posing for some advertisement? This is unacceptable especially when screening for a specific theme.

Then comes the tune at the end which I feel is more westernized. Why did they fail to include the same people who were in the old version? All I saw was Amitab and nobody else? Why did they leave so many good smart heros (sports, philanthropists, scientists etc) they fail to bring lot of achievers who brought fame and glory to our country.

My sincere request is please re-do the whole thing, delete that western music and give a proper dress code when filming such patriotic songs. Above all don’t forget our ancestors and current achievers.

i love song

mile sur hamara tumara sur bane hamara tumahra the best of best songs list.

It's always been our problem...

Glorifying and living in the past,i.e.

See,even a simple thing like this song. Instead of appreciating the newer version, we have to rewind ourselves by 20 years to praise a buried number. I really find this amusing. What is it about yesterdays that we Indians find so worship-worthy ?
If you actually compare that era and this,India has come light years ahead as a nation. Today, we are a 100 times more smarter nation which is in sync with, or rather setting the rules for the new world, instead of a poor & neglected 3rd world nation of the 80s.
All this is thanks to the new age icons who are featured in the new Mile Sur. Just imagine- In the previous Mile Sur, you did not know that India will be soon throwing up some names like Sachin Tendulkar,AR Rehman, SRK,Aamir khan etc to name a few,who will get us International acclaim and acceptability.
I go with the new one.I like today's India much more than the India of the 80s .

"Some kind of a dream of

"Some kind of a dream of unity has occupied the mind of India since the dawn of civilization. That unity was not conceived as something imposed from outside, a standardization of externals or even beliefs, It was something deeper and, within its fold, the widest tolerance of belief and custom was practiced and every variety acknowledged and even encouraged".- Jawaharlal Nehru wrote this in 1945.

Any version of "Mile Sur Merha Thumara" cannot capture the soul of this nation into a video. Those words are so deep and meaningful.

As far as the two versions are concerned I will go with the old one.

Yes I agree with the author, the new video is being made unneccesarily long. Good post and for me too the original was far better.

"If you and I sing the same tune, then it becomes ours"

”Mile Sur Mera tumhara, toh sur bane hamara ” meaning If you and I sing the same tune, then it becomes ours.
"The song ends by fading into the final notes of our National Anthem" -

The song and its simple meaning conveyed so powerfully by such a wide range of talented Indians. Making everyone nostalgic.

The Earlier version 'Miley Sur Mera Tumahra' was anytime 10000 times better & awesum with the simplicity, innocence & truth' & was much more transcdental in approch.
It was made with the purpose of strengthening our national integration. Created in 1988 by Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad and widely played on DoorDarshan.

Played every single day religiously on Doordarshan during our school/college days and on 15 August & 26th January. It had Dr.Balamurali Krishna,Bhimsen Joshi ,Lata Mangeshkar and Movie stars; Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Hassan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jitendra, Waheeda Rehman, Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azmi, Hema Malini,Tanuja Chandra. Sports stalwarts; Narendra Hirwani, Venkataraghavan, Prakash Padukone(Deepika Padukone' Dad, Arun Lal etc. M.S.S in the song was missing though. A powerhouse of talent, coupled with a melodious composition that made it so popular.

They have done an old number again. It's not an original one so one will do the comparison consciously or subconsciously.

New one include Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Juhi Chawla, Mammootty, and about 22 other actors from across India.

The music is by AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Yesudas, Louiz Banks, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Anoushka Shankar, Zakir Hussain and more.

The new one's just nothing close to good. Well this one seems like an artificially shot Celeb's wanderig whatt they are doing here.Well the Song is an awesome thing that u can lsiten to anytime - for ever n ever. This 'Phir Miley Sur'one dosent makes sense,it looks like a Celeb publicity from all around India,& less concentrated on the Traditional, Spritual Indian-ness, which the earlier one had.

Glad it happend though,we need such things - patriotic down to earth related to Indian roots.About National Integration & much more higher note dat is a heart felt feeling for Indian's deep inside, about what all good India has to offer & about every Indian inside us.

So you and I sing the same tune, & let it become ours. of our India, of the World, which remembers India for ever & ever.
