What do Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Genelia, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif have in common? Not their race to superstardom, nor the fact that all are in their mid-twenties, but it's their quirky sense of fashion...almost 'hip hop', Americanised, uber-chic style picks that appear to be here to stay, and for a real long time!
It can be said that Sonam Kapoor has been the daring one to go for the hip hop fashion first among the new breed of
actors. Eccentric colours and patterns, idiosyncratic designs and something that can be matched only by the Olsen twins or Lindsay Lohan, Sonam can always be spotted in hand-picked styles and quite bold too! Be it her striking fuschia purse or her heart-shaped sunglasses, her strapless dresses worn with skinny denims or the Balmain jacket worn with ankle-length pants, Sonam has done it all and in style!
Deepika soon followed lead and was seen in low waist skinny jeans, faded tees, asymmetrical jackets, flashy handbags et al. Another style (brought back from the 70s/80s) is that of the mini-skirt and t-shirt. Probably that style never did go out of fashion, but the new breed of stars in Bolly land brought it back with much pomp. Deepika, Asin, Katrina, Priyanka, Genelia, Sonam...all can be seen wearing the ultra-casual short denim skirt with either a sleeveless or a short-sleeved t-shirt, paired with gladiators or strappy sandals and junk jewellery.
The colours are getting 'funky' too, especially with unique contrast combinations and flashy accessories. Shruti Hasan, Sonam, Genelia have all sported such combos of orange with turquoise, fuschia with black, yellow with red and so on.
The trendy, much westernised style has been passed on to the older gen too! Especially the bold junk accessories, use of contrast colours and certain outfit patterns can be seen sported by others like Malaika Arora Khan, Sonali Bendre, Suzzane Roshan, Sushmita Sen etc have been seen wearing the hip hop style. The balloon dresses or asymmetrical jackets, jumpsuits, gladiator footwear, wedges, bold shoulder bags and loud costume jewellery have all been a favourite amongst these celebs older than the new lot.
Not that it is an attempt to be in vogue or catch attention, but these styles seem to have genuinely caught the fancy of these youngsters; and so much is the impact, that even regular college-goers can be seen wearing the hip hop styles and in style too!
With even the older lot following the new girls, 'funky style' clearly is here to stay, and there ain't no reason to complain!
