In Conversation With Suraj Jagan

Posted in

Suraj Jagan is the name which has created ripples in the music industry of Bollywood. He is one of the most talented and versatile singers of recent times. His versatality ranges from hard core rock numbers like "Zahareeley" to a very emotional "Give me Some Sunshine" to his latest sweet romantic song"SadkaKiya".

Most probably it's the rock backgoround  that gives his voice the raw touch making his renditions so unique...so magical.

Enjoy this exclusive interview where Suraj talks about some interesting facts about his musical journey so far...

B'Khush :How would you describe your journey from Chakraview to Bollywood?

Suraj Jagan: Chakraview wasn’t my first band, I started out in ’89 with a band called Krysys which was mainly a cover band. We used to play a few of our originals too. After that I was in Hong Kong for two years singing in a band called ‘MatchBox’. When I returned to Mumbai I joined ‘Chakraview’. Like any
musician’s journey, mine too was full of ups and downs. For the longest time I stuck to sing live, but
when financial difficulties hit, I started doing whatever came my way.. that’s how I got into the ad
world, singing jingles for a living. After that there was no turning back … Bollywood started looking for
new voices and I started singing playback.

B'Khush : How different is it to be a playback singer as compared to singing for a band?

Suraj Jagan:Personally I love singing, so I enjoy myself whether I’m in a studio or live.
The only difference is, that when its live, you have an immediate audience reaction which is great !
I’ve been doing live gigs with my Hindi Rock band nowadays and I’m loving every moment of it..

B'Khush : What was the first song that you recorded as a playback singer? how was the experience?

Suraj Jagan: My first  film song was for my fellow rocker Vishal Dadlani for his first movie ‘Pyar mein kabhi kabhi’.Vishal & Shekhar are great fun to be with. They are very serious about the recording but at the same time there are a lot of jokes and laughs that happen. I’m a big fan of their compositions which makes
singing one of their songs that much more interesting.

B'Khush : How has "Give me some sunshine" helped your musical career?

Suraj Jagan:Tremendously !! I’ll forever be grateful to Shantanu Moitra for getting me to sing this song.. it’s giving me a lot more sunshine than I ever expected.. This song has been on the charts for 7 months now & I won the Stardust Award for it. It’s been amazing …

B'Khush : Your recent hit "Sadka kiya"(I Hate Luv Storys) is a romantic song, where as "Zehreeley"( Rock On) was a hard core rock number. As a singer if you have to choose your favorite genre, what would it be-Romantic/Rock?

Suraj Jagan : I love singing ! The genre doesn’t really matter to me. ‘Zehereeley’ was the 1st real hard rock song in a Bollywood movie & I thoroughly enjoyed doing it. I’ve done songs like ‘Johnny Gaddaar’, ‘Rang De’,Give me some sunshine’ & recently ‘Sadka’ which are on the softer side.

B'Khush :Who are your favorite musicians (Indian and Western)

Suraj Jagan : Indian – R. Anand, Rupert, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Vishal Shekhar, Amit Trivedi, Shantanu Moitra…its abig list I can go on & on…
Western – Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Soundgarden, U2, Faith No More, Steve Vai…again it’s a big
list…

B'Khush :How important is it for a singer to receive awards and recognition, especially in such a competitive industry as Bollywood?

Suraj Jagan : It’s great to receive that kind of acknowledgment from the film fraternity . Also with an award one does get noticed a bit more, so yeah it definitely helps..

B'Khush: Which projects are you working on right now?

Suraj Jagan: Soon to be released films I have sung for are : Zoya Aktar’s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Patiala House’, Pradeep Sarkar’s ‘Lafangey Parindey’ , Disneys ‘Zokkomon’, Dharma’s ‘We are Family ‘ and a many more..

B'Khush :In Ten years from now, we will see Suraj Jagan as --------?

Suraj Jagan: Older & Wiser

B'Khush : Finally a message for your fans

Suraj Jagan : Grab every moment and live it to the fullest

A really nice short interview....Suraj is one of the most powerful modern day vocalists which India can have. I have watched him perform live at Kolkata & also love his craziness on stage & renditions in the studio as well as live.
